We are headed back to Italy in about ten days and decided that it was time to resurrect the blog. Aud hasn't been back since 2011, but Lex has spent time there every summer as a member of the Sangro Valley Project. This summer Aud will be joining the project to try her hand out at archaeology and see what it is Lex does all summer long. Aud even has her own trowel!

Before we head to Tornareccio for the field season, we will spend a few days on the Bay of Naples. Our plans are roughed out and include Pompeii and Herculaneum, of course, and then we hope to make it to Cumae, Paestum, and the Amalfi Coast, with perhaps a few of the Roman villas thrown in. There is lots of stuff open now that wasn't open the last time Lex was there.

After our vacation, we are renting a car in Naples and heading across the Apennines to Tornareccio, where we will be based for the summer. Tornareccio is a small town with fewer than 2,000 people located in the southern
Abruzzo. Much of the town is post- WWII when the Germans set charges along the main street as they were pulling out. The area has been occupied since the Bronze Age, however, as a group of tombs excavated by the Italian Archaeological Superintendency shows. There is a nice little section of the old town preserved as well. On a clear day you can see all the way to the Adriatic.

The excavation season will begin July 4th with the arrival of the field school students. We'll do our best to update things here. Once the dig starts up you can follow our adventures via the Sangro Valley Project Facebook page as well.
